Screen Scene VFX spent over a year providing all the previs for 'A Good Day to Die Hard'.
Having created the previs for the car chase sequence, SSVFX Supervisor Ed Bruce and his trusted VFX coordinator “Stocky” Nick Murphy went beyond the usual deliveries, shooting actual elements on Canon 5D cameras at a location on the A55 near Colwyn Bay, North Wales so that they could work the taxi flip shot up to a higher level in this demo.
"Once back in Dublin we cut three shots together and began the process of adding the CG MRAP, taxi, additional cars, FX destruction and Moscow backdrop.” Ed Bruce enthused like a sugar addled child, “We used 3ds Max and V-Ray, Thinking Particles, Krakatoa, and Fume to create our CG which was all composted within Nuke after being tracked with SynthEyes.”
Check out the breakdown of the process for yourself!

Bienvenida

Invasor VFX

Music: BSO Lucas Vidal

Examples in 30 sec: Composition

Examples in 30 sec: Cars

Examples in 30 sec: Light Effect

Examples in 30 sec: Wire Removal

Examples in 30 sec: Screens

Examples in 30 sec: Multiplication & Morphing

Examples in 30 sec: Stabilize

Examples in 30 sec: Keying

In this first episode of a new series called 'Close Up', Prime Focus World's Jon Thum and Neil Miller show us how they brought the sprawling metropolis of Mega-City One to life for Dredd 3D. From the first concept art sketches, through the development of this gritty, violent city, 'The Foundations of Mega-City One' offers an inside track on the role of the VFX house in developing concepts for big movies.

In the second of four 'Close Up' episodes exploring Dredd 3D, Prime Focus World's Jon Thum details just how the film's striking, standout, super slow-motion stereo 3D sequences were constructed.

In the third of four 'Close Up' episodes exploring our work on Dredd 3D, Prime Focus World's Jon Thum talks about the use of pre-viz on Dredd, and explains how pre-viz becomes so important when shooting in 3D.

In the fourth episode of Close Up, Jon Thum, Neil Miller, Tim Keene and Alex Pejic show how Mega-City One was created with extensive set extension, combining plates and CG to transform Johannesburg into the crumbling futuristic metropolis seen in Dredd 3D.

The Immortals VFX

Rodeo FX has been working on this action packed film with visionary director Tarsem Singh and Relativity Media from pre-production until final delivery. Our team of artists has taken an active part in the development of the look and feel of the film. We were involved directly at the conceptual stage working with the art department to determine the Immortals aesthetics. Our team has created many key environments such as Mount Tartars, a huge environment with a dam and the mountain where the Titans were imprisoned. Rodeo FX also created a CG army in this sequence consisting of thousands of soldiers. Rodeo FX was responsible for creating the encampment, and also the shrine set, both of these key environments for many of our matte painting establishing shots. Rodeo FX is often called in for 911 work, and it was also the case on Immortals. Rodeo swooped in towards the end of shot delivery to improve 10 shots and the monastery asset to create the aesthetic VFX Supervisor Raymond Gieringer was after, and had not been able to previously obtain.
The scope of the work on this film was huge and involved the coordination of all our departments. Tarsem Singh’s films are known for their stunning visuals and Immortals is no exception. Rodeo FX was truly honored to be a part of this epic film, giving us a chance to showcase what we do best, creating world class visual effects.

Blancanieves (mirror, mirror) VFX

Rodeo FX was brought in as part of the VFX production team to create 160+ VFX shots including: the film’s opening shot transitioning the seasons from summer to winter, the long shot of the Castle and the cliff on which it stood, the long distance shot with the approach leading to Snow White opening her bedroom doors, the interior of her bedroom, day and night sequences of the castle’s exterior, stormy skies, snow falling, computer generated (CG) crowds, Snow White’s courtyard and the interior and background of the evil Queen's Chamber. Rodeo FX created all of the Snow White castle establishing shots. Rodeo FX’s collaboration on Mirror Mirror marked the second time working with Tarsem Singh as the company also created visual effects on Relativity’s epic adventure IMMORTALS.

Los Tres Mosqueteros VFX

“One for all, and all for one!” This famous saying still resonates within our walls after completing our work on The Three Musketeers.
Creating the environment for the Tower of London in a 16th century context was one of the great opportunities that were presented to us during this project. We had to get into serious historical researches in order to make sure all details were perfectly accurate! From general architecture to very specific elements such as crowds, trees and flags, everything we designed in CG had to match with the time period. Our Matte Painting and Compositing teams were not left without any work as we also had amazing establishing shots on our scope of work. Being our third collaboration with the amazing team from Mr. X (Dennis Berardi) and director Paul W. Anderson, we must also mention that this was all happening in stereoscopy! The movie audience will be delighted to see the twist of D’Artagnan’s original tale taking place in a whole new dimension!
